Damp hessian, a sour note underneath, and when you open a carton there are grey-green mould spots creeping along the lamination edge of the bottom bags. The supplier's samples were perfect. The bulk wasn't. This is the single most common jute import failure, and it is almost never a sewing problem — it is a moisture and fibre-oil problem that starts on the farm and ends in the container. This guide covers the grades, the lamination decision and the freight-time controls that keep a wholesale jute programme from ending in a rejected lot.

Hessian grades and GSM: what "jute" actually means

Jute is a bast fibre, and the fabric woven from it is called hessian or burlap. For bag making, the commercially relevant range runs from roughly 240 GSM (light hessian, often used for wine and small gift bags) up to 400 GSM (heavy hessian for 10–15 kg grocery carry). Grade is determined by yarn count and weave density: coarser, more open weaves sit at the low end; tighter, heavier constructions at the high end. A wholesale jute bag supplier should state the GSM and the weave construction on the datasheet, because two bags both called "standard jute" can differ by 100 GSM and behave very differently under load. A typical medium hessian is woven at 6–8 picks per centimetre from 250–350 tex yarn; open up the weave and the bag breathes better but small items poke through the gaps — irrelevant for wine bottles, decisive for cosmetic bundles, which is why the weave density deserves its own line in the spec.
Behind the GSM sits the bale grade, which reflects retting quality — the controlled microbial rotting of harvested stalks in water that frees the fibre from the woody core. Well-retted fibre is long, soft and lustrous; under-retted fibre stays stiff and woody; over-retted fibre weakens and darkens. Mills sort jute into bale classes by colour, length, strength and rooty content, so name the grade in the purchase order — two reels can both read 300 GSM while one is premium long fibre and the other short cutting-grade jute that sheds lint and breaks early under load.

Laminated vs unlaminated: the trade-off table

The single biggest spec decision on a jute bag is whether the interior gets a laminated coating, usually a polypropylene or PE layer applied to one side of the hessian. Lamination blocks liquid and crumbs, which matters for grocery and food-adjacent use, and it smooths the inside surface so fine items don't snag on the coarse weave. It costs more, reduces breathability — which matters for freight, since trapped moisture has nowhere to go — and it complicates recycling at end of life.

One intermediate option exists between the two: a sewn-in inner liner instead of a coated surface. It costs more than lamination but keeps the hessian fully breathable and compostable, which matters for programmes that claim end-of-life composting — and if the liner is uncoated cotton, the bag keeps its natural-fibre story at a higher price tier than a simple laminated shell.
Lamination also seals in whatever moisture the hessian carries when the coating is applied, so check before the line: hessian above 10–12% moisture should be reconditioned or rejected, because the coating traps water against the yarns where it cannot escape — the hidden mould between laminate and fabric that surfaces weeks later in a container. Unlaminated jute self-regulates in transit; laminated jute cannot, so the pre-lamination reading deserves its own line in the QC record.

Batching oil odour: where the smell comes from

The smell buyers associate with jute is largely jute batching oil, an emulsion applied to the fibre during processing to soften it for spinning and weaving. The oil is meant to be largely removed in subsequent processing, but residual amounts remain in the finished fabric, and residual oil is exactly what bacteria feed on when the fibre gets damp. Suppliers in the EU and other regulated markets increasingly use phthalate-free, low-VOC batching oils; asking your supplier which oil grade their mill uses is a legitimate question, because it directly affects odour and REACH-oriented compliance. On the buying side, plan an airing period: even well-processed jute benefits from 48–72 hours of ventilation in a dry warehouse before bags go into retail distribution. The odour test belongs at sampling: open a sealed carton of finished bags that has been closed for 72 hours and smell the headspace — fresh-cut hessian has a mild earthy scent, while a sharp, chemical or fishy note means poorly processed fibre or excessive residual oil.

Moisture control during sea freight

The mould-and-odour failure is a humidity equation. Jute arriving for shipment should be pressed and baled at a moisture content below 14%; the container itself should be dry, and the two classic countermeasures are desiccant (typically 1–2 kg of silica gel or calcium chloride per carton for high-humidity routes) and restricted ventilation. A 30–40 day voyage through the tropics at 80%+ relative humidity will push moisture into any breathable natural fibre; laminated bags are at higher risk because the coating traps water against the fibre. Specify in the purchase order that the supplier loads dry goods with desiccant and hygrometer tracking, and check the container's inner wall for condensation before discharge — beading on the ceiling means the load has been through a condensation cycle regardless of what the cartons look like from outside. For long transit legs, add a humidity indicator card in each carton or a data logger in one carton per pallet; the thresholds are simple — keep relative humidity below 65–70% around the load and fibre moisture below 14%, because above those figures microorganism growth on natural fibres accelerates quickly. Container liners, which line the interior as a moisture barrier, are a further option on routes where condensation is chronic, at a modest cost per container.
On long legs, position the desiccant as carefully as you size it: calcium-chloride units absorb aggressively but can drip brine when saturated, so keep them on the container floor or in drip trays rather than on the goods, while silica-gel packets are passive and clean but absorb less per gram — the safer choice inside cartons. Distribute units through the load instead of stacking them at the door, because moisture stratifies in a closed container and the middle cartons show mould first.

Printing on a coarse weave

Printing is where jute humbles unprepared artwork. The open weave interrupts fine linework, so designs should avoid 1-point rules and tight halftones; bold spot colours and chunky typography print far more reliably. Screen printing remains the standard route, using a slightly higher ink deposit to bridge the yarns, and water-based inks sit better with the natural-fibre story than heavy plastisol layers. Expect the printed colour to be slightly muted on unlaminated jute — the fibre absorbs some ink — and budget for a 1–2 mm print misregistration tolerance rather than the tight tolerances you might get on flat canvas. Embroidery also works well on medium and heavy hessian, and it sidesteps ink-absorption entirely.
